BY LISA KING LANDMARK NEWS SERVICE Police arrested a man wanted in connection with numerous bank and grocery store rob- beries across the state on Tuesday following a weekend robbery at the Shelbyville Kroger. Stewart Ray, 24, and his alleged accomplice, Gregory Mitchell, 29, both of Louisville, were arrested at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at their resi- dence on Lunenburg Lane by Shelbyville Police.
Shortly after the arrests, police discovered the pair are wanted in a string of robberies and that Ray, a former resi- dent of Oldham County, had skipped parole back in September. No one was injured in any of the robberies, for which Kroger officials said they were thankful. Shelbyville Police Chief Robert Schutte calls the crimes the robbery here Sunday night, we started from scratch and we got information from Kroger representatives that the same person may have been involved in similar robberies in the Lexington area, so we contacted Lexington, he said. By Monday afternoon, police identified a finger- print from the scene. Other robberies that yielded surveillance pho- tos took place at three Northern Kentucky banks and two Kroger stores in Lexington, said Sherelle Roberts, public informa- tion office with Lexington Police.
Schutte said his detec- tives found out that Ray had also been in custody in La Grange, where he had also been on parole. he had absconded from his parole respon- sibilities there, and they heard from him since September, he said. Schutte said the pair faces multiple charges. For Ray, an alleged rob- bery in Louisville, and a Lexington robbery charge for Mitchell. They are also charged with first-degree robbery of the Shelbyville Kroger.
